Located on Mapledene Road in a conservation area of East London borough Hackney, this residential property has been stripped of many of its period features by architecture firm Platform 5, transforming it into a light-filled space with contemporary fittings. The ground floor was completely opened up and extended into the garden, merging the kitchen and outdoor patio area with a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door. An additional glass roof keeps the space well lit even with London’s typically gloomy weather, as well as contrasting the natural brick wall, which also doubles as a garden divider.
The project has received multiple awards, including the NLA’s Don’t Move Improve Award and the Grand Designs Award. It was also shortlisted for a RIBA Award.
