— WOMAD 2014: Day Three

To follow from my previous posts, here are a few Instagrams from the final day at WOMAD festival.

The evening weekend ended (for me, at least, as many partied on into the morning!) with a fantastic performance by Sinead O’Connor. I have never seen her sing live before and the power that she has in her voice is immense.

I was delighted to be able to catch Fatoumata Diawara, performing alongside Roberto Fonseca, as she was a quite a spectacle in the most wonderful dress, with traditional adornment.

I was expecting an awesome show by Nitin Sawhney, and he certainly delivered, but what I was not expecting was the beautiful voice of Nicki Wells. I think it took everyone by surprise and was a complete treat, certainly one of the highlights of the weekend! I am sure that she sang in three different languages within ten minutes… If you get the chance, do seek her out.

…and I am sure that you can guess by the photos here of her, that Marc was somewhat taken by how beautiful she is!

Everyday at WOMAD there is one band guaranteed to amuse and make us laugh – today it was Vinicio Capossela and the Post Office Band. The moment Vinicio leapt onto the stage, to a spaghetti western sounding theme, we knew were in for a good time.

Sometimes when I don’t recognise a few artists, I choose who to watch by the photo in the programme. This was the case with Samantha Crain – she simply looked cool. She played to packed audience and had us laughing in between songs – exactly what we needed to lift us up as the afternoon crept on. Hers is definitely one album you need to buy and blast out loudly in the sunshine!
