THE ENGLISH GROUP: PROJECT UPDATES

25/04/05   PROJECT UPDATE:   WEIDENFELD & NICOLSON

Weidenfeld and Nicolson Weidenfeld and Nicolson

The English Group has completed a design for the cover of ‘The Book Of Loss’, a first novel by Julith Jedamus. The novel, set in 10th Century Japan and focusing on the often complex codes of behaviour within the imperial courts and streets of Kyoto, demanded considerable research to ensure that all image and typographic devices were appropriate to the era and did not, conversely, deliver an approach that was little more than cliché. Moreover, the brief informing this project was that the overall style of the design be pitched to reflect the more literary tone of the novel and consequently, a broad selection of alternative designs and primary design development was undertaken prior to the accepted cover.

This particular book cover for Weidenfeld & Nicolson is the first of a number of cover designs for books being published over coming months and will sit alongside a number of more involved projects where The English Group has been engaged in developing the entire design platform for a series of ‘coffee table’ and limited edition books for world renowned celebrities, photographers or film-makers.
